REH 5301 - Foundations of Professional and Rehabilitation Counseling |

Learning Objectives: 1) Identify and describe the history and philosophy of the counseling profession and its specialty areas; 2) Articulate the differences between professional counseling organizations, including membership benefits, activities, services to members, and current issues; 3) Identify current labor market information relevant to opportunities for practice within counseling profession; 4) Describe ethical and legal issues related to counseling and related counseling disciplines; 5) Explain differences among certification, licensure, and accreditation: 6) Define the roles and function of the counselors across specialty areas and relationship with human service and integrated behavioral health care systems, including interagency and interorganizational collaboration; 7) Explain technology's impact on the counseling profession; 8) Identify strategies for personal and professional self-evaluation and implications for practice; 9) Identify self-care strategies appropriate to the counselor role; 10) Describe the role of counseling supervision in the profession; 11) Identify and describe the major historical foundations of the rehabilitation movement; 12) Identify the major legislative milestones which emphasize vocational, independent living, social, and rehabilitation services; 13) Educate the public and consumers regarding the rights of people with disabilities according to federal and state laws; 14) Examine multicultural issues that influence the experience of disability as a result of personal attitudes toward and treatment of people with disabilities; 15) Define the roles and functions of rehabilitation counselors including rehabilitation practitioner in public and private sector rehabilitation; 16) Describe the rehabilitation process and services that may be provided to individuals with varied disabilities to help them reach their goals; 17) Describe the variety of rehabilitation programs and facilities, defining methods and goals; 18) Identify placement techniques and describe factors that must be considered in helping clients obtain and maintain employment; 19) Identify technological aids and resources available to augment human capabilities such as mobility, communication, health maintenance, cognitive-intellectual functioning, hearing vision activities of daily living, social and recreational activities, and 20) Define the concept of independent living and identify independent living services.
