ALS 2320 - Language and Society |
The course explores sociolinquistics, that is, the study of the ways language works in society. Students will be familiarized with both classic and contemporary issues in the field, namely, the relationship between linguistic variation and social categories like socioeconomic class, ethnicity, geographical location, and age, to name a few. In addition, students will be presented with ways language creates identities, ways in which it constructs, mirrors, and disputes social justice and power in society.
